Description:During July of 2011, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer sailed for the Galápagos Rift Expedition (GALREX) 2011 (EX-11-03 Leg 2). Operations during this 18-day-at-sea expedition included a combination of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives in support of community, regional, NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) internal, and OER partner priorities as well as exploratory mapping operations targeting areas containing no or poor-quality modern mapping data. The EX-11-03 Leg 2 expedition combined seafloor mapping and ROV operations to explore the biology and geology of the region. The expedition explored areas in the Galápagos region and conducted 12 ROV dives and collected 23,183 km2 of multibeam bathymetry. The expedition explored an active underwater rift zone, seamounts, deep-sea coral communities, and hydrothermal vents as well as associated biota communities. This report contains summaries of the operations (including mapping operations), outreach activities, and the cruise schedule. All data associated with this expedition have been archived and are publicly available through the NOAA Archives.
